Popchock’s Player of the Night for Week 3 of the Ice Castle 3-vs.-3 Elite Hockey League, presented by Solyco Advisors, is Team Gordo’s defenseman Zander Kuqali!
Kuqali, one of two brothers on the team to play pro hockey overseas, made several big plays at both ends of the ice to help Gordo’s Tacos & Tequila unseat Team Raising Cane’s as group champion for Week 3.
In Game 2, against Team Title Wave Sports, he found Tyler Murovich for a goal that gave Team Gordo’s the lead before the break, and after setting up a Christian Humphreys goal that put his squad ahead to stay, Kuqali buried a feed from Humphreys for what would prove to be the decisive score in an 8-4 victory.
Most notably, his monster shift late in the championship round against Raising Cane’s shifted momentum and allowed Gordo’s to avenge its championship loss in Week 2. With Gordo’s trailing 2-1 early in the second period, Kuqali blasted a one-timer from the right circle to tie the game, then his dogged determination culminated in a rebound goal 15 seconds later to make it a 3-2 game.
Kuqali also blocked a shot inches from the goal line to keep the defending champs off the board late in regulation en route to a 5-4 overtime win. His 9 points, coming off 5 goals and 4 assists, are now the most among league defensemen through Week 3.
