Popchock’s Player of the Night for Week 5 of the Ice Castle 3-vs.-3 Elite Hockey League, presented by Solyco Advisors, is Team Gordo’s Tacos & Tequila forward Christian Humphreys!
While Logan Cooley, the West Mifflin-born star of the Utah Hockey Club, attracted attention from young fans, Humphreys, who may have a bright NHL future of his own, stole the show and the Week 5 championship for Team Gordo’s.
In Game 2, Gordo’s knocked off Week 4 champion Team Saloon of Mt. Lebanon behind Humphreys’ first hat trick of the competition. The 2024 seventh-round draft choice of the Colorado Avalanche fooled goaltender Kyle McLaughlin to give Gordo’s a 2-0 lead midway through the first period, then redirected a pass from Evan Konyen through heavy traffic to restore the two-goal lead early in the second.
With Team Saloon mounting a comeback, Humphreys took a home run pass from Nick Kuqali and beat McLaughlin five-hole on a breakaway to clinch the victory for his club.
In their latest confrontation with Cooley and Team Raising Cane’s, Humphreys made several key plays to give Gordo’s their second group title in three weeks and a first-place tie with Cane’s in the overall standings.
He set up Evan Konyen for a 2-1 advantage late in the first, then Konyen returned the favor 1:13 into the second, as Humphreys made it a 4-1 game. When Raising Cane’s rallied, Humphreys responded with a gorgeous pass to Zander Kuqali for the first of four unanswered scores by Team Gordo’s in the final two minutes.
Humphreys’ empty netter gives him four multi-goal games this summer and 13 goals in all through Week 5, ranking second on his team and fourth in the league.
